Uber drivers’ revenues in France and platform constraints

This article is based on data collected during the Recovering Workers’ Data to Negotiate and Monitor Collective Agreements in the Platform Economy (GDPoweR) project, funded by the European Commission. The project sought to examine ‘the collection and use of worker-generated data by digital labour platforms, and its implications for workers’ well-being, autonomy, and engagement in collective action. This paper contributes to the existing literature by opening the black box of Uber drivers’ earnings and strategies of income efficiency and resistance. It also investigates whether drivers’ individual and collective strategies supported/ or in parallel to collective bargaining allow them to negotiate with the platform company, or whether their activity continues to be largely shaped and constrained by algorithmic management. Despite the potential for bias due to our Paris-centric sample and the non-random nature of our selection method, we can still gain a broad understanding of how our data aligns with the wider Uber driver population by comparing it to the annual indicators provided by the platforms themselves, as mandated by French law and compiled by the ARPE agency in their yearly report.
